elle était = she was
Elle était toujours souriante. She was always smiling.

nous étions = we were
Nous étions en vacances. We were on vacation.
second person plural second person singular + respectful form of address
vous étiez = you were
Vous étiez à la maison hier. You were at home yesterday.
third person plural + masculine
ils étaient = they were
Ils étaient très contents. They were very happy.
third person plural + feminine
elles étaient = they were
